So, Where Have You Been?
A few people have been asking me this as of late and I'm sure a lot more are wondering. Especially those over at the MyTopix Support Forums. So, I thought I'd go ahead and give everybody an update as to what's going on with me.
As some of you know, I lost my job a few months back and have been unemployed ever since. I've mainly been making a small living off of client work here and there and haven't had much time for anything else. I realize that there are a few issues that need to be worked out yet with the new MyTopix installer, but, simply put, I'm not getting paid to do MyTopix, so it's on the back burner right now.
I have been actively seeking a job now for the past month and a half and have finally come across some very promising leads. The only problem is that all of these jobs are located in the Chicago area and I'm 2 hours south of the city. This is an issue because I'm more than qualified for most of these jobs, but they're just out of my reach. So, to rectify this issue, I've been trying to raise money for myself to move up there and rent out a sublet for a few months until I can get back on my own 2 feet. Once I'm up in Chicago, I'll have access to dozens of well-paid PHP development jobs and other client work, not to mention more time to work on personal stuff.

One job I'm looking into is for a popular dating site. It's pretty much the site that started the whole craze and has been around since the late 90's and they're wanting to transfer their current system over to a more modern solution. Not only that, but very recently Facebook has released an integrated development platform that allows you to create applications that work only on Facebook, but reside on your personal server. This would be one of my primary role at this job. They are looking for someone who can take Facebook's limited documentation and create scalable integration solutions that will allow Facebook users to utilize features on their dating site.
I have a final interview with these people tomorrow and, to try and seal the deal, I've already developed a Facebook application to showcase the fact that I can pretty much run on limited resources and documentation; hit the ground running, so to speak. So, this past week I've been developing a Digg clone that only Facebook users can use. The thing is, that this program utilizes pretty much all of Facebook's development platform's features. From their proprietary SQL (FQL) language and markup language (FBML), right down to their Mock Ajax functionality. I'm hoping this can win me the position.
I'm really aiming for this job, so I can finally settle down and get things cooking again with MyTopix and my other projects. For those of you that know me personally, the past few years have been extremely hectic and stressful for me. Even though all this is out of my hands, I truly apologize for forcing you all to have to wait for updates to MyTopix. As for my personal clients, I too apologize for some of the delays. I'm truly greatful that most of you have a great amount of understanding and patience.
Thanks!
P.S. - The Digg application's name is FaveBook and I plan on writing a full article on it once it's completed. Hopefully, people will pick up some interest and I can begin adding neat little extras here and there. If anything, it's a great portfolio entry.
Good luck with the Facebook app ;)
